Design Inspiration from the Hunters Ranch Model Home in San Antonio

New Homes

When we designed the Hunters Ranch model home in San Antonio, our goal was simple, but not easy. We wanted to create a professionally designed home that still feels personal, warm, and attainable, while also offering DIY design inspiration homeowners can realistically recreate. We wanted visitors to walk through the front door and think, “I could actually live here.” Not just admire the space, but imagine their own family, their own style, and their own memories layered into the home over time. That philosophy guided every design decision, from the cohesive color palette to approachable DIY details and a few thoughtfully chosen Etsy finds that bring unexpected personality to this San Antonio home.

“Designing the Hunters Ranch model, we had the San Antonio homebuyer in mind. We wanted this home to feel warm, livable, and attainable, while still offering a true designer look. That often means getting creative with DIY details and reasonably priced decor so homeowners can make the space their own. At Brohn Homes, we believe homes should be beautifully designed and feel personal from the start.” — Joelle Hogg, VP of Sales

How to Create a Cohesive Color Story in Your Home to Resemble the Model Home Look

One of the first things you’ll notice as you move through the Hunters Ranch model is how seamlessly the colors flow. Soft neutrals create a calm foundation, while intentional pops of green, warm wood tones, and muted blushes add depth and character without overwhelming the space. These are approachable color choices that homeowners can easily build on and make their own.

In the main living area, earthy greens ground the room and connect beautifully with the natural light pouring in from the windows. That same color story continues into adjacent spaces, creating a sense of continuity rather than hard visual stops between rooms. This kind of cohesion is what gives the home that “designer” feel, and it’s something buyers can achieve in their own home through thoughtful repetition and intentional color choices rather than expensive finishes.

The DIY Detail Everyone Asks About in This Model Home

One of the most talked-about features in the model is the arched trim and wallpaper detail in the living area. It looks custom. It looks high-end. It feels very San Antonio. And it’s completely achievable as a DIY project.

Using simple materials like 1” x 2” common boards, flexible trim, paint, and wallpaper, this detail adds architectural interest and texture without requiring a full renovation. It’s a perfect example of how we approached the entire home: investing in smart design moments that elevate the space while keeping overall costs in check.

We love that this feature also gives homeowners flexibility. Want to recreate it exactly? You can. Want to swap in a different wallpaper or paint color down the road? That works too.

Do-It-Yourself: What You’ll Need to DIY the Model Home Look

The materials are straightforward and easy to source:

  • 1” x 2” primed common boards
  • Matching flexible trim (great for curves and arches)
  • Wallpaper of your choice (pre-pasted is easiest if you’re new to wallpaper)
  • Paint in a semi-gloss finish
  • Finish nailer with 18-gauge nails
  • Wood filler, caulk, sanding block, level, and basic measuring tools

If your walls are textured, you’ll also need joint compound, a taping knife, and primer to prep the surface for wallpaper.

Step 1: Prep the Wall

Start with a clean surface and map out your design using a level. Measure carefully—both for the trim layout and the wallpaper area. If the wall is textured, skim coat the wallpaper section with joint compound, let it dry, sand smooth, and apply primer so the wallpaper lays flat and clean.

Step 2: Install the Trim

Measure and cut your trim pieces, then secure them to the wall using a finish nailer. Flexible trim makes it easy to achieve those soft curves. Fill nail holes with wood filler, sand once dry, and caulk along all edges for a polished, built-in look. Paint to match your existing trim or choose a bold color for extra impact.

Step 3: Apply the Wallpaper

Once the wall is smooth and primed, apply wallpaper according to the manufacturer’s instructions—starting in the center and working outward. Trim edges as needed for a clean finish. This step instantly adds pattern and personality behind the trim detail.

Bringing Your Personality into Your Home with Attainable Design Ideas

In the Hunters Ranch model home, the upstairs rooms are where we really let personality shine. These spaces were intentionally designed to show how a home can feel professionally styled while still leaving room for creativity, individuality, and personal touches homeowners can easily make their own over time.

In the upstairs loft, we leaned into fun with a bold wallpaper sourced from Etsy. It adds energy and character without feeling overwhelming, and it’s a great reminder that statement moments don’t have to come from big-box stores or expensive upgrades. Thoughtfully chosen wallpaper or accent details can make a big impact in any home.

The kids’ rooms were another opportunity to get creative. In one of the girls’ rooms, we painted overlapping frames directly onto the wall, matching the wall color to create a playful, layered effect. It’s a whimsical idea that homeowners could easily personalize, update, or repaint as their child grows and their style evolves. In the little boy’s room, we added one of our favorite features in the home: a deer-shaped wall bookshelf found on Etsy. While it took some time to assemble, the end result was well worth it. Pieces like this double as storage and wall art and show how unique, reasonably priced decor can bring personality into a space without relying on standard furniture.
