Owners Aaron and Adam Boenig turn customers into designers (with a little help).

For Aaron and Adam Boenig, putting customers in the driver’s seat when it comes to designing their new home and choosing its features has given their company, Brohn Homes, an edge in an otherwise difficult market. True Austinites Who Were Raised Right

Adam and Aaron are brothers and were born and raised in Austin. Aaron said, “You can say it is truly a family owned business owned by original Austinites.”

The corporate values of Brohn Homes are: high level of work ethics, honesty, integrity, product quality, buyer satisfaction, and buyer value, which are all values instilled in Aaron and Adam at a very young age. The Boenigs’ father was a big influence on their desire to build.

“As children, we were always working on a construction project,” said Aaron. “Whether it was building a storage shed or pouring a sidewalk, it seemed that we were always constructing or creating, and it was something that we all enjoyed.”

Looking back, Aaron believes he and Adam knew it was something they would be doing in the future. However, both built a solid foundation of education and experience before choosing to start their own business.

Aaron graduated with a B.S. in Landscape Architecture from Texas Tech University in 1997. After graduating, Aaron joined the prestigious San Antonio architecture firm of Ford, Powell, & Carson and shortly thereafter joined the planning firm of Bender Wells Clark. After three years of living in San Antonio, Aaron moved back to Austin and joined Lee & Associates, a multifamily consulting firm. Spending a significant amount of time around construction projects gave Aaron the appetite to start a home building company.

Adam also graduated with a B.S. in landscape architecture from Texas Tech University. Shortly after graduating, in 1999, Adam started his professional career with Land Strategies, a cutting-edge land development consulting firm in Austin. After a year, Adam joined a large production home building company as an entry-level construction manager. Adam quickly moved up the corporate ranks and in a short period was a land development manager performing acquisitions and entitlement management for large single-family projects.

In 2001, Aaron and Adam decided to construct their first home, and in 2002, Brohn Homes was founded. Within a few short months, the company was in full force with multiple projects under way.

Turning Challenges Into Opportunities

Today, a large majority of Brohn Homes’ business involves the construction of high-quality speculative homes with custom features at a competitive price. However, the company does construct a few custom homes each year. Brohn Homes builds luxury homes in some of the most sought-after locations in both Austin and San Antonio with product type ranging from the low 200s to more than $900,000.

As true with most all production home builders, the massive cyclical cycles of the home building industry over the last 10 years have been a big challenge for Brohn Homes. While the economic highs and lows have made forecasting of future projects and growth extremely difficult, Aaron admits there has been an upside. “It has forced us, as a company, to study and scrutinize lot positions/projects more closely and create product that has the ability to sustain success through a downturn,” he said. Additionally, the company has worked to increase the efficiency of its purchasing, construction, sales and general management, which has given it an edge in this difficult environment.

Brohn Homes stays on top of industry news and trends through its association membership in the Texas Association of Builders and Home Builders Association of Greater Austin, which, according to Aaron, is vital to the success of the company. “Members can play an integral role in government and regulatory arenas. By being a part of these processes (at all levels), members not only play an important role by having a voice in the law making process, but they are also kept up to date and made aware of: the innovations in construction science, the many issues we face as home builders, and the changing laws in our home building industry,” noted Aaron.
